  • Piano Ensemble Festival and Competition

Levels and Time Limits Levels are determined by the average age of the ensemble team. Average age will be rounded to the higher whole number. Concertos are not accepted. Ensembles may comprise of DUETS (one piano four hands), DUOS (two pianos four hands), TRIOS (one piano six hands), or QUARTETS (one piano eight hands or two pianos eight hands). Festival participants must play no more than one or two selections. Competition participants must play two selections. Partners may switch Primo/Secondo positions between compositions. A complete set of Theme and Variations (in its entirety) is considered one composition; therefore, partners may not switch positions between variations. A single movement of a sonata, sonatina, or suite qualifies as one composition. Any question regarding repertoire must be approved by the Piano Ensemble chairperson.     2025 NVMTA Musical Theatre Competition Competition Goal: To give students experience and preparation for the theatre industry's audition process at every level:  middle school, high school, the college audition circuit, and professional shows.  We warmly welcome students at every level of experience who love their art and would love to gain opportunities for public performance.  The 2025 competition will be held at St. Alban's Episcopal Church in Annandale, VA.   • Adult Student Rehearsal Workshops–October

    DETAILS In a friendly and welcoming environment, we talk about our pieces, perform for a warm and supportive audience, and learn how we can develop our playing through constructive suggestions. We also enjoy each others' company, support each others' journeys, and have fun! These are open REHEARSALS, not recitals. We expect to hear pieces that are “in progress” in addition to those that are more “complete.” We welcome interested and serious students to share even brief sections of pieces. We want to hear, share, and celebrate the process of students’ learning and incremental progress. Application Requirements Workshops are held select Sundays of most months. Choose which workshops to attend: we welcome students to attend just one class, or a handful, or all classes. To register, send an email to ahorowit@yahoo.com. There is no fee.     Location Luther Jackson Middle School, 3020 Gallows Rd, Falls Church, VA 22042 Dates Friday March 13th and Saturday March 14, 2026 Event Details Welcome to NVMTA’s largest, most inclusive event.  The Falls Church Spring Festival is an annual, non-competitive event that provides students of all levels an opportunity to perform and receive constructive feedback. Each student will receive a written evaluation and a certificate of participation. Students will accumulate points based on their individual ratings that go towards trophy awards.  These points are registered in a national database and can apply to Federation Festivals nationwide. Our festival includes piano, vocal, strings, and theory events. Events include solo, duet, and concerto formats. Theory is a written exam. Other woodwind family instruments may be included if minimum registration numbers are met. Fees Student fees: $25.00 per student, per event. Registration fees must be paid by January 15, 2026. Please note:  In order to register students, the teacher must federate their studio as a Junior Club with the Virginia Federation of Music Clubs by October 20, 2025.  The Junior Club dues are $35 for up to 16 students, +$1 for each additional student. CHAIR Greg Genter CO-CHAIRS Jeri Bennett LEVELS AND TIME LIMITS Elementary, e.g., simple Sonatinas = 4 minutes Intermediate, e.g., Clementi/Kuhlau Sonatinas = 7 minutes Advanced, e.g., Beethoven/Mozart/Haydn Sonatas =10 minutes REPERTOIRE REQUIREMENTS Sonata/Sonatina movements may be by the same composer or by different composers.  Students must enter two contrasting movements:  EITHER contrasting tempos (i.e. one slow, one fast) OR contrasting time periods (Baroque/Classical/Romantic/Contemporary).  For purposes of this event, Allegretto is considered "fast", and Moderato is considered "slow".  Beethoven’s “Moonlight” Sonata, for example, movements 2 and 3 would not qualify due to similar tempi.  In a two-movement Sonata/Sonatina, however, movements with similar tempi are acceptable.  Teachers must indicate in their application that the entrant’s repertoire is a “two movement sonata or sonatina”.  A Minuet is acceptable if it is a movement of a sonata and if it has a contrasting tempo and style from the other movement that is selected (i.e., one Allegretto, […]
