Non-member fees can be paid HERE.\n\nLevels and Time Limits\n\n\n\n\n	1-3 years study*5 minutes\n\n\n	4-7 years study7 minutes\n\n\n	8 or more years study10 minutes\n\n\n\n\n**This festival is not recommended for those who have studied less than a year in total. \nREPERTOIRE REQUIREMENTS\n\nTwo memorized compositions: one in the contemporary idiom from the 20th or 21st century and a second piece from any other period.\nBoth selections must be played from memory\, unless a piece uses non- traditional notation.\nNo simplifications\, transcriptions\, or popular songs allowed.\nContemporary settings of folk songs are acceptable\, especially for beginning students.\nMulti-movement works are allowed if they fit the time limit.\nImpressionistic pieces must fall into one of the contemporary idioms in order to be listed as the contemporary selection.\nEntrant will abide by all copyright laws and has permission to use all music given to judges and accompanists during all events as outlined here.\n\nContemporary Idioms\nOn the application\, please substantiate that the contemporary composition reflects one of the following idioms by noting its number and letter.  For example:  1a\, 2c\, etc: \n\nMelody\n\nMelodies are fragmented\, irregular\, or disjunctive.\nSignificant parts of the piece\, or even the whole piece\, lack melody.\nThe melody is constructed by chance or serial technique.\nThe melody is built from non-traditional scales such as modes\, a scale with “blue” notes\, etc.\n\n\nHarmony\n\nChords are unrelated to a major-minor system—clusters\, altered chords\, quartal or quintal harmony.\nThe composer makes simultaneous use of two chords or keys (bitonality).\nThe piece is not in any definable key (atonality).\nUnresolved dissonance is common.\n\n\nRhythm\n\nThe piece or large parts of it contain no bar lines.\nThe meter is irregular\, such as 5/4.\nThere are frequent meter or tempo changes.\nCross rhythms (polyrhythms)—5 against 4\, 7 against 8\, etc.—are prominent.\nJazz rhythms prevail.\n\n\nOther considerations\n\nNon-traditional notation.\nKnocking\, tapping or plucking some part of the instrument not traditionally used in this way.\nUse of prepared piano.\nUse of extreme range on the instrument.\n\n\n\nFor piano repertoire suggestions\, see Fall Festival Resource Guide. \nThere are also many suggestions on Nancy Breth’s Modern Piano Music list. \nHere is an addendum by Laura Bogart with additional repertoire. \nHere is a list of repertoire used in 2013-2018 which you may view online: Fall Festival Repertoire. \nEligibility\nTeachers may enter as many students as desired\, as long as all teacher guidelines are fulfilled. Open to all levels and to adults of any proficiency. \nTeacher Guidelines\nTeachers who enroll 1 to 10 students are obligated to judge for 3  hours; teachers who enroll 11 or more students are obligated to judge for 6  hours.  Teachers must be available to help in other capacities at the discretion of the chairman. \nTeachers must agree to abide by the Teacher Responsibilities. \nAwards\nStudents do not receive cumulative points as in other festivals. They receive written comments and ratings and a certificate of participation.

SUMMARY:Spring Festival (NFMC)
DESCRIPTION:Location\nLuther Jackson Middle School\, 3020 Gallows Rd\, Falls Church\, VA 22042 \nDates\nFriday March 12th and Saturday March 13\, 2027 \n\nEvent Details\n\nWelcome to NVMTA’s largest\, most inclusive event.  The Falls Church Spring Festival is an annual\, non-competitive event that provides students of all levels an opportunity to perform and receive constructive feedback. Each student will receive a written evaluation and a certificate of participation. Students will accumulate points based on their individual ratings that go towards trophy awards.  These points are registered in a national database and can apply to Federation Festivals nationwide. \nOur festival includes piano\, vocal\, strings\, and theory events. Events include solo\, duet\, and concerto formats. Theory is a written exam. Other woodwind family instruments may be included if minimum registration numbers are met. \nFees\nStudent fees: $27.00 per student\, per event. Registration fees must be paid by January 15\, 2027. \n\nPlease note:  In order to register students\, the teacher must federate their studio as a Junior Club with the Virginia Federation of Music Clubs by October 20\, 2026.  The Junior Club dues are $38 for up to 16 students\, +$1 for each additional student. After October 20\, 2026\, a late fee of $25 will apply. The VFMC State Treasurer will NOT accept Junior Club dues postmarked after November 14\, 2026.\nNVMTA membership must be up-to-date. Non-NVMTA members must submit Senior Individual dues along with Junior Club dues.\n\nRegistration\nRegistration period: October 15\, 2026 – December 15\, 2026. \nRegistration will be on the Vivace system on the NFMC website.  If you are new to our Festival\, please contact us at chair@novafestival.org so that we can set up your account. \nRepertoire Requirements\nMost events require two memorized pieces\, a Required Piece and a Choice Piece. Memorization is not required for adults. \nThe Required Piece must be chosen from the 2024-2028 Federation Festivals Bulletin.  These are pieces by contemporary American composers. \nThe Choice Piece must be by a non-American composer for all students at the Elementary 1 level and above.  Primary level students may choose a piece by either an American or non-American composer. However\, the Choice Piece must not be listed in the current Festivals Bulletin. \nFull repertoire requirements and guidelines can be found in the 2024-2028 Federation Festivals Bulletin available for purchase from NFMC at:  www.nfmc-music.org/order-federation-festivals-bulletin/. \n\n\nTeacher Guidelines\n\nTeachers with registered students are required be available on the dates of the Spring Festival to act as judges or fulfill other work assignments. \nAll teachers are expected to read and agree to follow the terms listed in the Falls Church Spring Festival Teacher Manual.  Available upon request. \n\nQuestions?\nContact chair@novaspfestival.org for further information.

Non-member fees can be paid HERE. \nAPPLICATION REQUIREMENTS\n\n Please register at new.mtfest.com\n Pay fee online through new.mtfest.com   Click on Billing\, then click on the $ next to the event.  Pay with Visa or Mastercard.  After payment is made\, you may print a copy of the invoice for your records.  You do not need to mail anything to the Chair.\n\nCHAIR\nGreg Genter \nCO-CHAIRS\nJeri Bennett\n \nLEVELS AND TIME LIMITS\nElementary\, e.g.\, simple Sonatinas = 4 minutes \nIntermediate\, e.g.\, Clementi/Kuhlau Sonatinas = 7 minutes \nAdvanced\, e.g.\, Beethoven/Mozart/Haydn Sonatas =10 minutes \nREPERTOIRE REQUIREMENTS\nSonata/Sonatina movements may be by the same composer or by different composers.  Students must enter two contrasting movements:  EITHER contrasting tempos (i.e. one slow\, one fast) OR contrasting time periods (Baroque/Classical/Romantic/Contemporary).  For purposes of this event\, Allegretto is considered “fast”\, and Moderato is considered “slow”.  Beethoven’s “Moonlight” Sonata\, for example\, movements 2 and 3 would not qualify due to similar tempi. \n In a two-movement Sonata/Sonatina\, however\, movements with similar tempi are acceptable.  Teachers must indicate in their application that the entrant’s repertoire is a “two movement sonata or sonatina”.  A Minuet is acceptable if it is a movement of a sonata and if it has a contrasting tempo and style from the other movement that is selected (i.e.\, one Allegretto\, one Adagio).  A Theme and Variations movement is not acceptable for this festival.  Please note that students will be stopped at the time limit and should plan any cuts so that a substantial portion of both movements is heard by the judges. \nAll music must be performed from memory.  Entrant will abide by all copyright laws and has permission to use all music given to judges and accompanists during all events as outlined here. \nELIGIBILITY\nFor solo piano only —no piano duets.  Any student wishing to carry over participating years from previous Sonata/Sonatina Festivals may do so. \nTEACHER GUIDELINES\nTeachers who enroll 1 to 10 students are obligated to judge for 3 to 4 hours; teachers who enroll 11 to 20 students are obligated to judge for 6 to 8 hours.  Teachers must be available to help in other capacities at the discretion of the chair. \nTeachers must agree to abide by the Teacher Responsibilities. \nAWARDS\nEach participant receives a trophy.  Trophies get larger with each year of participation.  Judges may choose students to advance to the Second Round based on students’ performances.  Students who advance to the Second Round will receive a ribbon and the opportunity to play for Second Round judges who select students for the Honors Recital.
