SUMMARY:Musical Theater Competition
DESCRIPTION:2025 NVMTA Musical Theatre Competition \nCompetition Goal:\nTo give students experience and preparation for the theatre industry’s audition process at every level:  middle school\, high school\, the college audition circuit\, and professional shows.  We warmly welcome students at every level of experience who love their art and would love to gain opportunities for public performance.  The 2025 competition will be held at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Annandale\, VA. \n[Due to the short amount of time we have in our venue\, each studio is limited to entering no more than 8 students (total) into this competition. Prior to registering\, please contact the competition chair\, Bharati Soman (bharati@bharatisoman.com)\, to let her know how many students you plan to enter. If there is availability after the initial registration period\, extra slots may be offered to studios who wish to enter more than 8 students.] \nDate\nSunday\, October 19\, 2025\, 2:00pm-6:00pm \nDeadline\nRegistration deadline:  Thursday\, October 2\, 2025 \nFees\n$30.00.  (Includes accompanist fee) Non-NVMTA members have to pay the $50 fee (per student per event) plus registration fee.  All fees are non-refundable. Non-member fees can be paid HERE. \nApplication Requirements\n1.  Please register at new.mtfest.com.  Register under “Universal Application”. \n2.  Pay fee online through new.mtfest.com.  Click on Billing\, then click on the $ next to the event.  Pay with Visa or Mastercard.  After payment is made\, you may print a copy of the invoice for your records. \nChair(s)\nBharati Soman and Nicole Lamm \nEligibility\nStudents in grades 6-12 who study with an NVMTA member. Adult students may participate for comments only. \nRepertoire  Requirements\nDivisions I-III [I = MS grades 6-8; II = HS grades 9-10; III = HS grades 11-12]:  each student will have a total of 3 minutes to perform two contrasting musical theater cuts (traditionally called 32-bar cuts: approximately one minute each). \nComments Only: same as above [Students of any age\, including adults\, may participate for comments only. On the Universal Application\, choose “Adult” under Age (regardless of the student’s actual age) to register for comments only.] \nDivisions may be adjusted\, if warranted\, by the number and age of applicants.  Students whose repertoire does not follow the judging standards set out below\, will be eligible for comments only. \nA LEGAL copy (hard copy) of sheet music (including piano accompaniment) must be presented at check-in on the day of the competition. Digitally purchased sheet music MUST include the cover page with the “Authorized for Use By…” notice. \nJudging Standards\nAdjudicators will be listening for a demonstrated ability to sing a healthy belt/mix as well as era-appropriate “legit” technique.  The student’s goal should be to present contrasting song selections that will allow their technical\, musical\, artistic\, and theatrical grasp of the wide range of musical theater styles and techniques to be displayed.  For example\, a student could sing a Golden Age song using legit sound and an up-tempo contemporary song incorporating a healthy belt/mix.  Or a singer could select two contrasting contemporary musical theatre songs where one song is a ballad and the second song is an up-tempo.  Judges will also be paying attention to how effectively a singing actor can portray emotion on the stage\, how well they embody their character\, etc. \nAwards\nJudges will award 1st ($200)\, 2nd ($100)\, and 3rd ($50) places in each division.   At their discretion\, they may also choose to award Honorable Mentions to deserving students. \nAccompaniment Guidelines\nAn accompanist WILL be provided\, and ALL participants MUST use the provided accompanist. Students MAY NOT rehearse with the hired accompanist prior to the competition. \nTeacher Guidelines\nParticipating teachers are expected to assist the chair(s) as needed based on the number of students enrolled\, regardless of subsequent student withdrawals. Student MUST study individually\, directly and regularly with the registering teacher. Teachers must agree to abide by the Rules of Competitive Events published by NVMTA and to the Teacher Responsibilities.  All judges’ decisions are final.

In 2024 Ms. Brancart received the  MTNA “Teacher of the Year” award.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPerformances\nPerformances as a collaborative artist have taken Ms. Brancart across North America and internationally. Students who play a concerto without a cadenza risk being disqualified from prize eligibility if there is a cadenza in existence for that concerto\, and a cadenza is not performed. A student may compose and perform his/her own cadenza for a Mozart or Haydn concerto\, but it must be notated/printed in legible format for the judges. It is understood that the quality of the cadenza will be taken into consideration when judging the contestant’s performance. Prior approval is required. Any questions about cadenzas should be referred to the chairman BEFORE the application deadline. Teachers must indicate the timing of the cadenza on the judges’ score. \nThe following is a list of repertoire that has been used in the past to give you an idea of ages/repertoire/and levels for this event.  It is intended as a guide only\, not a required repertoire list. NVMTA Repertoire Lists – Concerto Competition-Piano. \nEntrant will abide by all copyright laws and has permission to use all music given to judges and accompanists during all events as outlined here. \nEligibility\nStudents may play at current school grade or higher. To enter at a higher level\, students must obtain the written approval of a chairman. In subsequent years these students must enter at consecutively higher grade levels. First-place winners may not compete again in the same level. First place winners are no longer required to wait a year before competing in a higher level.  In order to enter NTMVA student events\, either the teacher or student must live in Northern Virginia\, or\, the lessons must be taught in Northern Virginia. \nAwards\n\n\n\n\n	1st2nd3rd\n\n\n	Level 1$30$20----\n\n\n	Level 2$50$25----\n\n\n	Level 3$200$100$50\n\n\n	Level 4$300$150$75\n\n\n	Level 5$500$250$125\n\n\n\n\n\nTeacher Guidelines\nTeachers may not accompany their own students. \nPlease provide one published score of the concerto and cadenza with all  measures numbered\, and which must not bear the student’s or teacher’s name. \nTeachers must agree to abide by the Rules for Competitive Events as well as the Teacher Responsibilities.  Teachers will be assigned duties and should expect to be available for volunteer duty on the day of the competition.  Assignments and hours are at the discretion of the chair.
