DESCRIPTION:NVMTA Lecture Series-December \n \n “All about Piano Playing and Chopin”\nEvelyne Brancart\n  \nDecember 5\, at 10.00 am Eastern time\n  \nPreeminent pianist Evelyne Brancart\, a native of Belgium\, is recognized as one of the acclaimed teachers and performers of her generation\, having been awarded prizes in four international piano competitions —Gina Bachauer-United States\, Montreal-Canada\, Viotti-Italy\, and Queen Elisabeth in Belgium. She has additionally received international critical acclaim\, and broad peer and public recognition from solo engagements with orchestra (including the National Orchestra of Belgium and the BBC Symphony Orchestra) and recitals in New York and London; and throughout Europe and the United States. \nBackground\n\nWith artistry rooted in 19th century practices\, Ms. Brancart background includes 10 years of work with Spanish master\, Eduardo del Pueyo\, a student of Liszt disciple Marie Jaëll\, as well as later studies with Maria Curcio\, Leon Fleisher and Menahem Pressler. Ms. Brancart was the youngest musician ever to be invited to study in the Chapelle Musicale de la Reine Elisabeth\, and was later awarded the gold medal from the Belgian Government.\n\nCollaboration and Pedagogy\n\nNoted as a musical collaborator and pedagogue as well as soloist\, Ms. Brancart is Professor of Piano at the Jacobs School of Music (Indiana University) where she served as piano department chair for ten years. Along with seminars “The Hand as a Source of Inspiration” (On the Chopin Etudes) and  “Deconstruction for Reconstruction” (Reflections on J.S. Bach)\, Ms. Brancart has given Master Classes worldwide and will be performing and teaching in Argentina and Chile this coming summer\, as well as at the Orford Music Academy and Festival in Canada. She has impacted many emerging pianists\, many of whom have achieved significant careers as performers (including Jonathan Biss ) and university/conservatory-level teachers. In 2024 Ms. Brancart received the  MTNA “Teacher of the Year” award.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPerformances\nPerformances as a collaborative artist have taken Ms. Brancart across North America and internationally. Ensemble partners include the Cleveland\, Pacifica and Orion String Quartets and many prominent instrumental artists. Additionally\, Ms. Brancart has been a regular guest at the Aspen Music Festival and other important summer music festivals. She has been invited as a judge for competitions including the Queen Elisabeth Piano Competition and International Piano Competition André Dumortier (Belgium)\, International Piano Competition Maria Clara Cullell (Costa Rica) and Fischoff Chamber Music Competition (United States). Students who play a concerto without a cadenza risk being disqualified from prize eligibility if there is a cadenza in existence for that concerto\, and a cadenza is not performed. A student may compose and perform his/her own cadenza for a Mozart or Haydn concerto\, but it must be notated/printed in legible format for the judges. It is understood that the quality of the cadenza will be taken into consideration when judging the contestant’s performance. Prior approval is required. Any questions about cadenzas should be referred to the chairman BEFORE the application deadline. Teachers must indicate the timing of the cadenza on the judges’ score. \nThe following is a list of repertoire that has been used in the past to give you an idea of ages/repertoire/and levels for this event.  It is intended as a guide only\, not a required repertoire list. NVMTA Repertoire Lists – Concerto Competition-Piano. \nEntrant will abide by all copyright laws and has permission to use all music given to judges and accompanists during all events as outlined here. \nEligibility\nStudents may play at current school grade or higher. Composition scores are to be submitted in a digital format (PDF preferred) personally produced by the composer and should not exceed 10 minutes in playing time. \nThere is no restriction on the selection of instruments. There are neither age or grade requirements nor requirements concerning form or style. \nAudio recordings may be produced by the student or teacher (preferred). Computer generated recordings are also permitted. Video recordings are not allowed. \nTEACHER GUIDELINES\nParticipating teachers must pick up materials from the chair at the conclusion of the event or pay $5 to the chair to have materials returned by mail. \nAWARDS\nThe Jo Lombard Award ($150) will be given by competition judges to one overall outstanding composition. Second ($75) and third place ($50) awards may be awarded by judges at their discretion. \nThe Frances Hollans Award ($25) will be awarded to a student age 12 and under whose original composition is judged to be most creative. \nEach student will receive judges’ comments and a certificate of participation or special award. SUMMARY:Spring Festival (NFMC)
DESCRIPTION:Location\nLuther Jackson Middle School\, 3020 Gallows Rd\, Falls Church\, VA 22042 \nDates\nFriday March 13th and Saturday March 14\, 2026 \n\nEvent Details\n\nWelcome to NVMTA’s largest\, most inclusive event.  The Falls Church Spring Festival is an annual\, non-competitive event that provides students of all levels an opportunity to perform and receive constructive feedback. Each student will receive a written evaluation and a certificate of participation. Students will accumulate points based on their individual ratings that go towards trophy awards.  These points are registered in a national database and can apply to Federation Festivals nationwide. \nOur festival includes piano\, vocal\, strings\, and theory events. Events include solo\, duet\, and concerto formats. Theory is a written exam. Other woodwind family instruments may be included if minimum registration numbers are met. \nFees\nStudent fees: $25.00 per student\, per event. Registration fees must be paid by January 15\, 2026. \n\nPlease note:  In order to register students\, the teacher must federate their studio as a Junior Club with the Virginia Federation of Music Clubs by October 20\, 2025.  The Junior Club dues are $35 for up to 16 students\, +$1 for each additional student. After October 20\, 2025\, a late fee of $25 will apply. The VFMC State Treasurer will NOT accept Junior Club dues postmarked after November 14\, 2025.\nNVMTA membership must be up-to-date. Non-NVMTA members must submit Senior Individual dues along with Junior Club dues.\n\nRegistration\nRegistration period: October 15\, 2025 – December 15\, 2025. \nRegistration will be on the Vivace system on the NFMC website.  If you are new to our Festival\, please contact us at chair@novafestival.org so that we can set up your account. \nRepertoire Requirements\nMost events require two memorized pieces\, a Required Piece and a Choice Piece. Memorization is not required for adults. \nThe Required Piece must be chosen from the 2024-2028 Federation Festivals Bulletin.  These are pieces by contemporary American composers. \nThe Choice Piece must be by a non-American composer for all students at the Elementary 1 level and above.  Primary level students may choose a piece by either an American or non-American composer. Non-member fees can be paid HERE.\n\nLevels and Time Limits\n\n\n\n\n	LevelGradeTime Limit\n\n\n\n\n	Level 1Ages 13-156 Minutes\n\n\n	Level 2Ages 16-186 Minutes\n\n\n	Level 3Adults8 Minutes\n\n\n\n\nComment Only:  No age limit\, 6 minutes. \nLevels may be adjusted if warranted by the number and age of applicants. \nRepertoire Requirements\nLevels 1\, and 2: Two selections in different languages\, one of which is English.  \nLevel 3:  Three selections representing (1) Baroque/Classical\, (2) Romantic\, and (3) 20th or 21st Century. Selections must include at least two languages\, one of which is English. At least one selection must be an art song \nComments Only:  Two or three contrasting selections of varying styles\, including one in a foreign language.  \nMusic must be performed from memory\, except for oratorio selections. In Level 3\, music must be performed in the original language; in the case of opera and oratorio\, in the original key. \nFor questions about repertoire\, please contact the Chair or Co-Chair. \nEligibility\nPrevious first-place winners may not compete again in the same level.  Singers under professional management are not eligible. Students must be taught lessons in person in Northern Virginia. \nTeacher Guidelines\nSingers must bring their own accompanists.
