SUMMARY:NVMTA Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:Kevin Elam: Crafting a Unique & Multi-Faceted Music Career\n\n\n\nFebruary 26\, 2025\, 10am – 12pm\, Zoom\nJoin Kevin Elam for an inspiring presentation on building a nontraditional career in music! He’s an Irish singing champion\, a gigging jazz pianist\, a teacher of multiple instruments\, a Strathmore Artist-in-Residence\, a member of the Suspicious Cheese Lords\, and director of the new Renaissance ensemble Ars Gratia Populi. Learn about the unexpected opportunities that shaped his unique career\, and how he uses platforms like Patreon and YouTube to expand his reach.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKevin Elam is a multi-instrumentalist and 2019 All-Ireland Champion in Men’s Singing. Although he boasts a strong background in classical piano and choral singing\, and a degree in jazz keyboard\, Kevin is rooted in Irish traditional music. In addition to playing the tin whistle\, guitar\, bouzouki\, mandolin and banjo\, Kevin has also honed his skills as a singer and interpreter of Irish traditional song\, cultivating a significant repertoire of ballads. This intensive practice and study of the tradition were formally recognized in August of 2019\, when he was awarded first place in Men’s English Singing at the 2019 Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann\, held in Drogheda\, Ireland\, and took home the coveted “Dalaigh Shield”\, an award only won by one other American in its 65-year history. \nIn addition to his title in Men’s Singing\, Kevin has also won second place medals in accompaniment (2022) and newly composed songs (2023) at the All-Ireland Fleadh. He is a highly decorated competitor back home at the CCE Mid-Atlantic Fleadh\, including nine first-place awards (tin whistle\, singing\, accompaniment\, newly composed songs\, piano\, and miscellaneous instrument). In 2020\, Kevin was awarded a grant from George Mason University’s Young Artist Commissioning Project\, and consequently recorded his debut album of traditional ballads\, If I Were A Small Bird\, released in September 2021. Most recently Kevin was honored to be selected as one of six Artists in Residence at Strathmore Music Hall in Bethesda\, MD for the 2023 season. \nKevin enjoys a busy performance schedule in the U.S. and abroad\, appearing both as a soloist and with several ensembles at many of the top Irish and Scottish festivals\, venues and concert series. Performance credits include AMP by Strathmore\, Hylton Performing Arts Center\, the Music Center at Strathmore\, the Kennedy Center\, the National Gallery of Art\, and many more. Kevin has also toured extensively with Scottish National Fiddle Champion Sean Heely\, performing throughout the country at Highland games\, Celtic festivals\, concert halls and much more. \nKevin greatly enjoys sharing his knowledge and insight with students\, and has established a reputation as an excellent teacher. In addition to giving group workshops – such as with the prestigious faculty of DC’s premiere Irish traditional music festival\, MAD Week – Kevin also gives private lessons in piano\, guitar\, bouzouki\, tin whistle\, and voice\, and creates online lesson content on Patreon and Youtube. \nKevin stays quite busy with other musical pursuits outside of the Irish traditional music scene. Holding a BM in Jazz Studies from George Mason University\, Kevin performs on occasion as a pianist in jazz and popular styles in the DC area. He has also developed a reputation as a skilled chamber singer\, and enjoys singing Renaissance polyphony (as well as other choral works) with several professional choirs\, as well as directing his own a cappella chamber group\, Ars Gratia Populi. Kevin can be heard playing and singing on Mondays at the weekly session at the Irish Inn in Glen Echo\, and at a variety of other DC area sessions.

Adagio by George Walker. \nPerformer – Alyssa Conde\nTeacher – Gabriel Dobner \n\n\nNancy O’Neill Breth teaches piano and chamber music to students of all ages in the Washington DC metro area. For a window into her approach\, visit Effective Practicing\, short YouTube demonstrations of ‘best-practice’ practice tips. Nancy owes her life in music to the priceless gift of studies under giants such as Margaret Saunders Ott\, Bela Nagy\, Gyorgy Sebok and Rudolf Kolisch. Her experience in Indiana University’s famed Sebok/Gingold/Starker chamber music class transformed her from an aspiring piano soloist into a lifelong chamber musician. \nWhile living in Mexico City\, New York City and Washington\, DC\, Nancy was founder and pianist of chamber ensembles that performed to critical acclaim. The Mexico City News wrote that her Camerata de Mexico “offers the best chamber music in Mexico.” The Washington Post praised her “superb musicianship” and called her Music Connection concert series “brilliant” and “imaginative.” Over time\, teaching evolved from a side interest to the center of Nancy’s professional life. Breth students excel in local\, regional and national piano and chamber music competitions. Several have appeared on National Public Radio’s “From the Top”; and four teams from the Breth Studio have won MTNA’s national duet competition. \nAlthough Nancy’s academic degrees were in piano performance\, she earned her pedagogy “degree” from stellar teachers in her own community. Now\, she interacts with young teachers both formally\, as an adjudicator and lecturer\, and informally in various ways such as her monthly online sessions\, Talk About Teaching. Nancy taught piano\, chamber music and pedagogy at Washington DC’s Levine School of Music for many years. While she was chair of Levine’s Chamber Music Department\, the number of adults and children studying chamber music at the school grew from around 40 to almost 400. \nNancy first presented for MTNA at its Seattle conference 25 years ago. She’s been invited back a number of times\, most recently in 2024 as curator of the entire Artistry Track of Pedagogy Saturday. \nNancy’s latest project for teachers and students is her Modern Piano Music List\, a clickable list of performances and sources of 20th and 21st century piano repertoire. Breth publications include Practicing the Piano; The Piano Student's Guide to Effective Practicing; and Parent’s Guide to Effective Practicing\, plus a set of piano trios for beginners\, Six Songs from John Gay’s The Beggar’s Opera. All are published by Hal Leonard Corp. She has written for Clavier\, American Music Teacher and Clavier Explorer.
