Ensembles with an average age below 7 or over 18 must play in the Festival division. \n\n\n\n\n	Level 1Age 7-84 minutes\n\n\n	Level 2Age 9-105 minutes\n\n\n	Level 3Age 11-126 minutes\n\n\n	Level 4Age 13-158 minutes\n\n\n	Level 5Age 16-1810 minutes\n\n\n\n\n\nRepertoire Requirements\nAny piano composition written or arranged for one or two pianos is acceptable. Concertos are not accepted. \nEnsembles may comprise of DUETS (one piano four hands)\, DUOS (two pianos four hands)\, TRIOS (one piano six hands)\, or QUARTETS (one piano eight hands or two pianos eight hands). \nFestival participants must play no more than one or two selections. \nCompetition participants must play two selections. \nPartners may switch Primo/Secondo positions between compositions. A complete set of Theme and Variations (in its entirety) is considered one composition; therefore\, partners may not switch positions between variations. \nA single movement of a sonata\, sonatina\, or suite qualifies as one composition. \nAny question regarding repertoire must be approved by the Piano Ensemble chairperson. \nEnsembles may play from a same-titled work for more than one year but must play a different movement at each year of entry. \nAll pieces must stay within the given total time limit for the appropriate age level. \nMemorization is not required. \nEntrants must abide by all copyright laws and shall use music (for performers and judges) as outlined here. \n\nEligibility\nAn ensemble team must choose only one division they will perform in: Festival or Competition. That team may not enroll in both. Any individual student\, however\, may be associated with any number of different ensembles and may participate in both the Festival and Competition divisions. \nThis event is held in recital format. A competitive team must be present by the start of their recital time and must remain for its entirety. If not\, they will receive judges’ comments only. \nThe previous year’s First Place winner ensembles must enter either the next higher competitive age level or the Festival division. \nAwards\nAll performers receive a certificate of participation and comment sheets. In the Competition division\, First\, Second\, Third\, and Honorable Mention ribbons will be awarded. Awards are announced and presented immediately after the completion of each age group level. \nTeacher Guidelines\nIf enrollment is high\, this event could run two days (Saturday and Sunday).  Teachers and students should keep both days open when registering\, until the schedule is announced. \nEnsembles must either turn their own pages or provide their own page-turners. Ensembles must provide an original\, non-zeroxed published score to the judges for each work they will be performing. All measures must be numbered. The scores should not bear the student’s nor the teacher’s name. \nAll participating teachers will be required to fulfill duties among which include judging\, monitoring\, or providing refreshments. \nTeachers must agree to abide by the Rules for Competitive Events  as well as the Teacher Responsibilities.

SUMMARY:NVMTA Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:Kevin Elam: Crafting a Unique & Multi-Faceted Music Career\n\n\n\nFebruary 26\, 2025\, 10am – 12pm\, Zoom\nJoin Kevin Elam for an inspiring presentation on building a nontraditional career in music! He’s an Irish singing champion\, a gigging jazz pianist\, a teacher of multiple instruments\, a Strathmore Artist-in-Residence\, a member of the Suspicious Cheese Lords\, and director of the new Renaissance ensemble Ars Gratia Populi. Learn about the unexpected opportunities that shaped his unique career\, and how he uses platforms like Patreon and YouTube to expand his reach.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKevin Elam is a multi-instrumentalist and 2019 All-Ireland Champion in Men’s Singing. Although he boasts a strong background in classical piano and choral singing\, and a degree in jazz keyboard\, Kevin is rooted in Irish traditional music. In addition to playing the tin whistle\, guitar\, bouzouki\, mandolin and banjo\, Kevin has also honed his skills as a singer and interpreter of Irish traditional song\, cultivating a significant repertoire of ballads. This intensive practice and study of the tradition were formally recognized in August of 2019\, when he was awarded first place in Men’s English Singing at the 2019 Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann\, held in Drogheda\, Ireland\, and took home the coveted “Dalaigh Shield”\, an award only won by one other American in its 65-year history. \nIn addition to his title in Men’s Singing\, Kevin has also won second place medals in accompaniment (2022) and newly composed songs (2023) at the All-Ireland Fleadh. He is a highly decorated competitor back home at the CCE Mid-Atlantic Fleadh\, including nine first-place awards (tin whistle\, singing\, accompaniment\, newly composed songs\, piano\, and miscellaneous instrument). In 2020\, Kevin was awarded a grant from George Mason University’s Young Artist Commissioning Project\, and consequently recorded his debut album of traditional ballads\, If I Were A Small Bird\, released in September 2021. Most recently Kevin was honored to be selected as one of six Artists in Residence at Strathmore Music Hall in Bethesda\, MD for the 2023 season. \nKevin enjoys a busy performance schedule in the U.S. and abroad\, appearing both as a soloist and with several ensembles at many of the top Irish and Scottish festivals\, venues and concert series. Performance credits include AMP by Strathmore\, Hylton Performing Arts Center\, the Music Center at Strathmore\, the Kennedy Center\, the National Gallery of Art\, and many more. Kevin has also toured extensively with Scottish National Fiddle Champion Sean Heely\, performing throughout the country at Highland games\, Celtic festivals\, concert halls and much more. \nKevin greatly enjoys sharing his knowledge and insight with students\, and has established a reputation as an excellent teacher. In addition to giving group workshops – such as with the prestigious faculty of DC’s premiere Irish traditional music festival\, MAD Week – Kevin also gives private lessons in piano\, guitar\, bouzouki\, tin whistle\, and voice\, and creates online lesson content on Patreon and Youtube. \nKevin stays quite busy with other musical pursuits outside of the Irish traditional music scene. Holding a BM in Jazz Studies from George Mason University\, Kevin performs on occasion as a pianist in jazz and popular styles in the DC area. He has also developed a reputation as a skilled chamber singer\, and enjoys singing Renaissance polyphony (as well as other choral works) with several professional choirs\, as well as directing his own a cappella chamber group\, Ars Gratia Populi. Kevin can be heard playing and singing on Mondays at the weekly session at the Irish Inn in Glen Echo\, and at a variety of other DC area sessions.

SUMMARY:Adult Student Rehearsal Workshops--December
DESCRIPTION:DETAILS\nIn a friendly and welcoming environment\, we talk about our pieces\, perform for a warm and supportive audience\, and learn how we can develop our playing through constructive suggestions. We also enjoy each others’ company\, support each others’ journeys\, and have fun! \nThese are open REHEARSALS\, not recitals. We expect to hear pieces that are “in progress” in addition to those that are more “complete.” We welcome interested and serious students to share even brief sections of pieces. We want to hear\, share\, and celebrate the process of students’ learning and incremental progress. \nApplication Requirements\nWorkshops are held select Sundays of most months. Choose which workshops to attend: we welcome students to attend just one class\, or a handful\, or all classes. To register\, send an email to ahorowit@yahoo.com. There is no fee. Register any time up until the Wednesday before the workshop. \nEmail Deadline\nThe Wednesday prior to each workshop. Because space is limited\, registration may close earlier than this deadline if the workshop is full. \nEligibility\nIn order to enter NTMVA student events\, either the teacher or student must live in Northern Virginia\, or\, the lessons must be taught in Northern Virginia. The class is primarily for adults. Sometimes\, youth ages 16-17 can participate. Please email ahorowit@yahoo.com for questions about eligibility.
