SUMMARY:NVMTA Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:Kevin Elam: Crafting a Unique & Multi-Faceted Music Career\n\n\n\nFebruary 26\, 2025\, 10am – 12pm\, Zoom\nJoin Kevin Elam for an inspiring presentation on building a nontraditional career in music! He’s an Irish singing champion\, a gigging jazz pianist\, a teacher of multiple instruments\, a Strathmore Artist-in-Residence\, a member of the Suspicious Cheese Lords\, and director of the new Renaissance ensemble Ars Gratia Populi. Learn about the unexpected opportunities that shaped his unique career\, and how he uses platforms like Patreon and YouTube to expand his reach.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKevin Elam is a multi-instrumentalist and 2019 All-Ireland Champion in Men’s Singing. Although he boasts a strong background in classical piano and choral singing\, and a degree in jazz keyboard\, Kevin is rooted in Irish traditional music. In addition to playing the tin whistle\, guitar\, bouzouki\, mandolin and banjo\, Kevin has also honed his skills as a singer and interpreter of Irish traditional song\, cultivating a significant repertoire of ballads. This intensive practice and study of the tradition were formally recognized in August of 2019\, when he was awarded first place in Men’s English Singing at the 2019 Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann\, held in Drogheda\, Ireland\, and took home the coveted “Dalaigh Shield”\, an award only won by one other American in its 65-year history. \nIn addition to his title in Men’s Singing\, Kevin has also won second place medals in accompaniment (2022) and newly composed songs (2023) at the All-Ireland Fleadh. He is a highly decorated competitor back home at the CCE Mid-Atlantic Fleadh\, including nine first-place awards (tin whistle\, singing\, accompaniment\, newly composed songs\, piano\, and miscellaneous instrument). In 2020\, Kevin was awarded a grant from George Mason University’s Young Artist Commissioning Project\, and consequently recorded his debut album of traditional ballads\, If I Were A Small Bird\, released in September 2021. Most recently Kevin was honored to be selected as one of six Artists in Residence at Strathmore Music Hall in Bethesda\, MD for the 2023 season. \nKevin enjoys a busy performance schedule in the U.S. and abroad\, appearing both as a soloist and with several ensembles at many of the top Irish and Scottish festivals\, venues and concert series. Performance credits include AMP by Strathmore\, Hylton Performing Arts Center\, the Music Center at Strathmore\, the Kennedy Center\, the National Gallery of Art\, and many more. Kevin has also toured extensively with Scottish National Fiddle Champion Sean Heely\, performing throughout the country at Highland games\, Celtic festivals\, concert halls and much more. \nKevin greatly enjoys sharing his knowledge and insight with students\, and has established a reputation as an excellent teacher. In addition to giving group workshops – such as with the prestigious faculty of DC’s premiere Irish traditional music festival\, MAD Week – Kevin also gives private lessons in piano\, guitar\, bouzouki\, tin whistle\, and voice\, and creates online lesson content on Patreon and Youtube. \nKevin stays quite busy with other musical pursuits outside of the Irish traditional music scene. Holding a BM in Jazz Studies from George Mason University\, Kevin performs on occasion as a pianist in jazz and popular styles in the DC area. He has also developed a reputation as a skilled chamber singer\, and enjoys singing Renaissance polyphony (as well as other choral works) with several professional choirs\, as well as directing his own a cappella chamber group\, Ars Gratia Populi. Kevin can be heard playing and singing on Mondays at the weekly session at the Irish Inn in Glen Echo\, and at a variety of other DC area sessions.

DESCRIPTION:April 21\, 2021: Nancy Breth\, “New World Symphony: harmony\, discord\, conflict\, resolution and joy in the life of a transfer student and his teacher” \nA walk through the all-important first year as The New Teacher: making the interview count\, setting up for success\, creating a safe environment\, forging partnerships\, getting down to business\, managing surprises\, building trust\, celebrating success. \nNancy O’Neill Beth teaches piano and chamber music in Arlington VA and Washington DC. Soon after joining NVMTA in 1982\, Nancy and fellow newcomer Jacqua Yeomans joined the board as co-chairs of the Fall Festival. This was the first of numerous board positions she would hold over the years\, and also the first of many treasured friendships with NVMTA members. She is also a longtime board member of WMTA.  \nNancy collaborates with teachers at home and throughout the country. She’s headlined a number of state MTA conferences\, and 2020 marks her fifth appearance as a presenter at MTNA’s national conference. While Nancy is proud that some of her students have been successful in competitions\, even up to the national level\, her primary goal is to help all music-loving students build the skills they need to become lifelong pianists.  \nNancy’s latest project is Effective Practicing\, a collection of short You Tube videos for pianists. Her book\, Practicing the Piano\, two Guides on Effective Practicing and a chamber music volume\, are published by Hal Leonard.

SUMMARY:Bonnie Kellert\, "Challenges in Young Pianists (including pedal!)"
DESCRIPTION:November 20\, 2020: Bonnie Kellert \n“Challenges in Young Pianists (including pedal!)” \n\nChallenges For Young Pianists includes developing and achieving technical ability as well as understanding and acquiring musicianship.  Each student requires special attention to individual needs and challenges.   Encourage cultivation of students’ strengths by promoting proper practice habits\, laying a strong foundation in all aspects of music and keeping special needs in mind when selecting repertoire.  Demonstrate for your students and share listening time with them; Focus on musicianship\, including interpretation\, phrasing\, listening skills\, pedaling\, tone control\, stylistic differences;  Guide students to build a solid technical foundation geared toward proper posture\, strong fingers\, appropriate hand and finger position (including a reliable bridge)\, flexible wrists and relaxed arms.  Help students develop a wide dynamic palette\, facility\, ease of playing and so forth.  Demonstrate basic technique such as sound production\, articulation\, evenly played scales & accuracy.  Examine\, distinguish and determine each technical challenge before approaching and discovering solutions. Set effective goals and clear solutions to motivate students.   Demonstrate HOW and WHAT to practice.  Select appropriate repertoire for each student so that established objectives can be accomplished without frustration or tears.   Encourage analysis and memorizing\, performing for others\, sight reading and duet playing.   Introduce pedaling to expand expression and color.  The pedal is the “soul of the piano.”  Have students write essays about the composer\, the type of piece they’re learning\, comparing “periods” of composition\, styles\, etc. so they continue to develop their listening skills.  Above all\, students should have fun exploring repertoire\, composers and music history\,  and teachers should have fun sharing all aspects of music with their students! \nBonnie Kellert is in constant demand as a performer\, teacher\, lecturer and Master Class presenter.  Her numerous D.C. solo recitals include the National Gallery of Art\, Phillips Collection\, Cosmos Club\, Textile Museum\, Lyceum\, and abroad in Sweden and Thailand.  Kellert’s performances have elicited these comments: “All her playing is imbued with unpretentious\, unspoiled musicality”… ”a musician who has command of the keyboard\, a brilliant mentality and a dramatic flair balanced by sensitive insight…”   \n Kellert has given Master Classes at the Shanghai Conservatory in Mainland\, China\, McDaniel College\, Levine School of Music\, and for various music teacher organizations.  Her lecture recital series have taken her to Pennsylvania\, New Jersey\, Massachusetts\, Ohio\, North Carolina\, Tennessee\, and throughout Maryland and Virginia.  She has given presentations for MSMTA and VMTA Conventions and the Piano Pedagogy Conference. \nAwarded a full scholarship at Peabody Conservatory of Music\, Kellert studied with internationally acclaimed pianist\, Leon Fleisher earning her BM and MM Degrees in Performance and was presented the Alexander Sklarevksi Award at graduation ceremonies.  She is the recipient of many 1st prize awards\, including the Washington International Competition for Pianists and the Jordan Piano Award. \n Kellert is a past-president of the Washington Music Teachers Association and Montgomery County MTA.  Her articles have been published in Keyboard Companion and the Pedagogy Forum.  She served on the faculty of Levine School of Music for 22 years and presently mentors teachers and maintains a private studio in her home for serious students.  She was Steinway’s “Teacher of the year” in 2016.   Bonnie’s website is bonniekellert.com. \n
