The NVMTA Bach Baroque Festival and Competition is an annual event dedicated to celebrating the timeless music of Johann Sebastian Bach alongside other Baroque composers. On Saturday, February 17, 2024, the enchanting melodies filled Lewisville Presbyterian Church in McLean, VA, marking yet another splendid rendition of this event.

With over 200 talented piano and string students participating in both festival recitals and competitive showcases, the atmosphere was brimming with anticipation and musical fervor. The first round performances unfolded in hour-long recitals. After the second round auditions, 27 exceptional students graced the stage in the coveted Honors Recital held on February 18th.

A highlight of the event, as always, was the majestic presence of the harpsichord, serving as a poignant reminder of the Baroque era’s rich musical heritage. The experience of playing and listening to Baroque pieces on this exquisite instrument was truly unparalleled, also making it a favorite spot for memorable photographs.

For prospective students and educators, particularly new teachers to the event, there’s no need for apprehension regarding performance levels. Teachers have the option to enroll students in the more relaxed festival division or the competitive competition division, catering to varying preferences for intensity and challenge. It’s worth noting that student performance slots are allocated based on repertoire selection rather than age, grade, or years of study, fostering a fair and inclusive environment for all participants. Students are required to showcase at least one piece by Johann Sebastian Bach, with the option to explore additional works by an array of Baroque maestros. From Handel to Vivaldi, Telemann to Corelli, the repertoire offers a tapestry of musical styles and expressions, ensuring a truly enriching experience for performers and audiences alike. The NVMTA Bach Baroque website serves as a comprehensive guide, detailing all repertoire categories for easy reference. https://nvmta.org/event/bach-baroque-festival-and-competition/.
